Ultrafast Fibre was established in 2010, in order to help fulfil a Government initiative to rollout ultra-fast broadband across New Zealand. Ultrafast Fibre is responsible for building a 3,000km fibre network, to allow individuals and businesses to connect to a new generation of broadband in their communities. Around 163,000 premises will be passed and able to connect.  The fibre network is bringing ultra-fast broadband to the cities of Hamilton, Tauranga, Wanganui and New Plymouth and the towns of Hawera, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Tokoroa.

Construction of the network began in 2011 and will be completed in 2016. This fast construction timeframe means Central North Island schools, businesses and households will be among the first in the country to be able to connect to ultra-fast broadband at speeds that rival the best in the world.
